In my last post I covered the topic of OCD, what is it, and one of the methods used to treat it that I absolutely abhor. In this post I’m going to cover a few more of my thoughts about just exactly how to cure yourself (yes.. CURE) of OCD forever.

What we know already…

We know that OCD is an emotional problem. The primal brain, the part of the brain we’ve had since the start of evolution, is focused on what I like to call the 4 F’s. These are Fight, Flight, Food, and Fornicate. These are the driving forces in our lives. It’s is only because of this part of the brain that we are able to do absolutely anything.

The way in which the primal brain gets us to do anything is through emotion, through a complex set of feel good or bad emotions. For example if you saw a tasty treat in a bakers shop window, it is the primal brain that gets us to go in there and buy it, that’s the food response. If we saw a dangerous animal coming our way we run to get away from it, that is the primal brain’s flight response, if we are feeling oppressed by another person being a jerk we stand up to them, this is the primal brain’s fight response. In each of these situations it took the primal brain giving us an emotional response for us to do something about what was in front of us.

Where OCD becomes a problem

Have you ever thought that if you took away the repetitive behaviours, thoughts and actions from a person with OCD they would instantly become cured again? Think about it. Everybody (I hope) washes their hands to get rid of germs, everybody checks their gas cooker to make sure they turned it off, and everybody will check the locks on their house to make sure it is secure. These are all natural normal behaviours that we do most of the time without even thinking about it. When OCD comes into play and becomes a problem is when there is an out of balance emotional reaction in the brain that leads someone to repeat these actions over and over again. In this instance there is a strong connection down to the primal brain that cause someone to do something over and over, which cuts out the connection back to the creative/adaptive part of the brain. This means someone with OCD never has the "It’s turned off", "My house is safe", "My hands are clean" though, hence repeating over and over.

OCD Treatment and Self Help

Now to the part which this post is all about. How do we go about treating OCD. Well I can honestly say after years of research there is a LOT of bad advice out there in the ether about what to do if you have an emotional problem like OCD. There are a LOT of people who just don’t get it, and will offer snake skin oil like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Hypnosis and even the dreaded medication.

Let me tell you these treatments DON’T work. They are not worth wasting any time or money on. I know this because none of these treatments operate at the level of the brain where the primal and creative/adaptive interactions go on. They are symptom chasers, the aim with them is to get you comfortable about having emotional problems. I think the one I detest the most is medication. I’m only going to touch on it  but my disgust for it goes deep.

Medication

For OCD this often comes in the form of SSRI’s but can also include Anafranil, Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, and many more. They way they work for the most part is to create unhealthy levels of a certain kind of brain chemical which keeps you locked in your creative/adaptive brain. This brain chemical is simply a "feel good" brain chemical and does nothing to treat the underlying out of balance emotional reaction. The problem exists in the primal brain and yet medication is going after the creative/adaptive brain. At some point these brain chemicals become unsustainable and if taken to this degree (lifelong… which is what the drug companies want) will cause untold damage, not only to your brain but also to your natural ability to function. If you think about it, by being kept in your creative/adaptive brain you are not allowed access to the primal brain where movement is generated, if your brain can’t generate the chemicals used to get you to move you will cease to function by action and miss out on many of life opportunities.

Treatment by CBT and Others

CBT from the offset is a therapy that cannot work, much like medication it does nothing to deal with the root cause of the imbalance. Instead it uses many methods to try and get you to where you are comfortable with doing things repeatedly or it tries to install an opposite pattern of behaviour where you are comfortable with (for example) everything being dirty. Those who do CBT openly admit that it can take months and years for the therapy to begin to work. Now I don’t know about any of you but the thought of trying to overcome a problem for years scares me, it scares me that I would waste that much of my life dealing with something which is actually very simple. It is also not uncommon for CBT to try and use force to get you through your problem. Force is not a viable way to treat OCD, or any other emotional issue. In using force you are trying to get a person to become comfortable with someone by bashing them against it repeatedly. If you took a hammer and started hitting your hand it is going to be hugely painful, however if you do this over a long period of time eventually you’ll cause so much damage your body won’t respond to it anymore and you can keep hitting your now pulped hand, this is the idea that CBT uses…… how can it make any sense.

OCD Self Help

And so with so much bad advice around it is imperative that you ask your own questions and find a method that can allow you to treat OCD. In self help you are where the ball stops. No longer can you complain or moan, you have yourself and you have a tool it is down to you to get the results you want.

This is true in a lot of other life situations too. All too often people want excuses and the ability to blame something else for something they want not working instead of taking the onus on themselves.

In doing self help you are going to need a tool that work. In OCD you need a tool that allows you to work on the level of the brain where your problems are. In my experience there is only one tool out there that works. I’m not going to sell this tool to you as "a secret" "what others don’t want you to know" or any of that shit. This tool has been around for over 5 years, it has helped thousands of people all over the world, it has been one of the major factors in turning my own life around, allowing me to permanently remove the out of balance emotional reactions that led to my own OCD and Social Anxiety.

So what is this tool? It is called the 3D Mind. I will be doing another post shortly about what exactly it is and how it works but for now I just want to offer the name and a way to access it. The 3D Mind will allow you to work on the underlying issues that keep you stuck, that generate the patterns of behaviour that you repeat over and over again, which cause so much distress and stress.
