Ah yes the good ol’ topic of smoking. Whether you are a smoker or not it is present in everyday of our lives. Everyone knows a smoker or has known a smoker at some point and everyone has their own views on the matter.

These days the big push is to get everyone to stop smoking, after all we have evolved to the stage where we have realised the health implications so why wouldn’t we want to quit. Well I have to say this post is not going to be about whether we should or should not stop smoking. I don’t want to get involved either way, though I will say that on occasion I have been known to enjoy the odd good ACID cigar.

Quitting Smoking Side Effects

So this is what this post is all about. What are the side effects of quitting smoking? and more importantly how can they be prevented.

According to this source on quitting smoking it takes (for nicotine to leave your system):

"72 to 96 hours.  Trace residues can remain for up to a year but these have no addictive effect."

OK so in terms of biological impact you can give up smoking completely if you don’t smoke for 72 to 96 hours… Great!

But wait…. then why can’t people simply quit, it can’t be that hard to give up for just 3 or 4 days.

Well when you consider the side effects, carrying on smoking can often seem like the better option (at least in the short term)

  • dizziness (which may only last 1 to 2 days after quitting)
  • depression
  • feelings of frustration, impatience, and anger
  • anxiety
  • irritability
  • sleep disturbances, including having trouble falling asleep and staying asleep, and having bad dreams or even nightmares
  • trouble concentrating
  • restlessness
  • headaches
  • tiredness
  • increased appetite

Smoking is a SYMPTOM of an underlying emotional problem

Yup that’s right smoking is not the problem anyone should be looking at. The act of smoking is merely an action that induces an emotional state that allows someone to escape from an underlying emotional problem. What that emotional problem is will probably be fairly unique to that person. Common emotions that will trigger a smoker to smoke are: stress, depression, boredom, and fear.

The BIGGEST most COMMON reason people fail to quit smoking is they don’t tackle the real problem

Yup that’s right. Because of the misconception that smoking is the real problem people will just go ahead an tackle the symptom in the hope of improving their lives and health. This makes it much harder to give up though. Not only are you now trying to combat an emotional imbalance but you are also trying to remove a habit (of potentially years in length). Most of the side effects of quitting smoking are not caused by the withdrawal of the method of smoking. We know this because as is said above nicotine (the addictive substance) is basically gone in 3 to 4 days, yet the side effects can last a lifetime. Because of this we know that they are caused by a conflict in the brain where smokers still have their root problem and they are trying to use willpower to fight it.

If you tackle the PROBLEM and not the SYMPTOM the symptoms will naturally go away

Smokers who are the most successful at giving up for life are those that recognise they have an emotional imbalance that needs to be tackled. When you tackle the emotional imbalance the need to smoke disappears completely and practically none of the side effects will be felt. It’s kind of like having a phobia without fear. In order to have the phobia you need to be scared of something. If you deal with the fear it doesn’t matter what that fear was of, whatever caused you to go into a bad emotion or have a panic attack or however you dealt with your fear, that will be gone.

The WORLD’s single most successful tool for quitting smoking permanently and completely is:
