The Procrastinator Does this feel like you?
Of all the skills that one can accumulate as they go through life, one of the greatest must surely be the skill of managing one’s own time effectively. For years and years I have found myself a pretty bad procrastinator. I don’t by far consider that I have been one of the worst. My list of achievements is pretty decent and my list of regrets fairly small in comparison.
However recently I went through a huge change, this change involved me taking a look at my achievements and saying to myself "you know what, that’s good but there’s so much more I can be doing". Circumstances in my life now led me to needing to gain some real quality time management skills. The course I worked through made me make some very small incremental adjustments in HOW I do things. Where this led I could have never believed before.
I wrote a list of all the things I do on a day to day basis, I found 80% of that list to be stuff that I didn’t really need or want to do anyway, they were low value activities that I did because I had in mind that "activity = achievement", this couldn’t be further from the truth. My motivation has skyrocketed and my available time to do things has grown massively, so much so that all the really important things I had to do before I now do as day to day items and I’m looking forward to taking on some great new challenges. So how does this apply to social anxiety? As a socially anxious person I found myself doing all kinds of activites to busy myself so I could avoid going out, facing my fears and speaking to people.
If you’re in this situation, likely at least 80% of what you do is meaningless avoidance strategies.
As a short term patch, by getting yourself some great time managment skills you can make all kinds of investments in yourself so that when you feel it’s time to break through the shell that is keeping you stuck you have a great base to start from, somewhat the opposite to trying to break through the shell then wobbling along like a new born calf as you try and find your feet in this big wide world.
So ask yourself today:
What get’s in the way of me having great success in my life right now, even WITH social anxiety?
